Sell 1000 Things
Last week I decided to start something. I decided I wanted to sell 1000 things. Even if those things only sold for $1ea, it would mean $1,000 in my pocket and less stuff in my house. I have way too much stuff.
Last year or the year before I was part of a challenge on a forum, where a member decided to sell 1,000 things to help with spending money on their overseas holiday. I am no longer a member of that site so can’t find the link to the blog they had. They did pretty well and had a good time on their trip.
I have been looking around my home and I am sure I could come up with a fair amount of things to sell, as well as make things to sell etc. It didn’t have to be 1000 things you have right now. You just need to find a way to sell 1000 things.
I have 20 weeks left of my $40,000 challenge so decided what better time than now to do a 1000 things challenge. It will help de-clutter my home, clean out my garage and put money in my pocket.
Think about it. There are more ways to sell things than you probably think. It doesn’t need to be all your own things you sell, although that is a good starting point.
- You could host a garage sale, put things on Gum Tree or eBay, list them on Facebook. It doesn’t just have to be things you own, thought that is a great place to start.
- You could start doing party plan like Tupperware, Larissa Bright or Nutrimetics. Sell Avon or something at work or to family and friends.
- Write and sell an eBook
- Buy stuff to resell
- Make crafty things like cards, table cloths, aprons or anything else to use up your fabric stash
- Bake things to sell such as cookies, cakes and slices. You could try selling them to businesses as well as at markets.
When looking at places to sell you could
- Host the garage sale in your driveway, lawn or have an in house sale
- Sell at markets
- Sell on your own blog
- Create a for sale album on Facebook
- Gum tree, classifieds, eBay, quicksales, any site you can list and sell
- Sell on consignment through stores or directly to them (jewelry could be sold on consignment, whereas biscuits or cakes could be sold directly)
So what do you think you will do?
This is part of my $40,000 challenge for me, so I am really going to go for it! I already had a garage sale last week and have listed more things to sell online. From last week I am currently at 183 things for $822. Pretty happy with that so far!

You have inspired me to start going through all my ‘clutter’ and sell things I no longer need. I have so much baby gear that I don’t use anymore, and it’s just taking up so much room. I’m going to do the Sell 1000 Things challenge, starting this week. Thanks for the inspiration!
I love this idea of 1000 things to sell.
Kylie, I’ve taken your sell 1000 things challenge for our house. We moved here two weeks before my son was born, and so we never got around to unpacking everything. By now, anything that hasn’t been unpacked we just don’t need. So I’m putting all kinds of stuff up on Ebay and Craigs List to try to reduce clutter and increase our income. I’ve sold 5 items so far, which is not much, but each one has felt like a major win since it got the clutter out of our house and made us a little money AND helped us be more environmentally friendly by making sure our unwanted things were reused. I’m going to put all the extra earnings into one account and figure out what to do with it when we’re done.
That’s great Emily. Have fun with it. It has been great for me. I have made a few thousand so far and have less ‘stuff’.
I’m totally inspired to declutter and I have decided the aim is for us to sell 1000 items over the next 6 months through a combination of garage sale, childcare fair (I’ll help to organise it) and ebay/ other online methods – should be a challenge – that’s 167 items a month. We’ll also need to have a separate bank account to tally up the amount made.
Thanks for the idea – will keep you posted – Liz
That’s great Liz. Good luck with it. It makes such a huge difference to your life getting rid of stuff and making money at the same time. Let us know how you go.
Another inspiring post Kylie, thank you. I read one of your bigger artiles, can’t remember the name sorry, just before christmas, and have decided that in 2012 this SAHM is gonna make some $$$ ! My goal is small to start but clearly defined. Looking forward to more posts from you with more inspiring stuff!
I realize this is an old post, but it is a great idea. I like it so much, I am going to start a challenge myself on my newest blog effort, Thriving Today.
Thanks for the inspiration!
Hi Kylie,
I love the concept and plan to sell unwanted but good to use stuff, I’ve planty with three kids. Decluttering is going to be the inspiration and will start right away. I’m planning to sell food at festivals as well but the process is very long but will get there, just registered for ABN and next Dept of Fair Trading etc. Get comercial kitchen licence etc but I know in the end I will get there. In the mean time, must sell what i already have. Thank you for the challenge. Love it!!
